The three movements of this piece are also fairly difficult listens, but for a different reason. Oedipus Tyrannus, to me at least, clearly sounds like a soundtrack. That is, the music is not meant to stand on its own, rather it is meant to accompany some stage or screen action. The music is wonderfully spooky though. I am curious as to whether this is technically a live piece or not. To my ears, it lacks the live excitement and energy that I hear even in Le Ponts De Ce. The most disturbing aspect, of course, is how much of Oedipus Tyrannus was lifted for Encore. We are all aware that the live albums are really creatures of the studio, but it is a bit of a shock to really *learn* this. Especially with Encore, my favourite TD album. I've also just finished listening to the encore from Rheims. This sounds wonderful to me. It's really very simple, like they are just playing with the knobs, letting the sound phase in and out, but it works for my ears. This friend ordered these two Hollywood suckfest albums AND the complete DD by mistake.. He knows, I don't have much money left for CD's and send the doubles for free to me. I'd respond to the friend (as I don't wanna piss him off): 'Huge thanks, but I think they did release better stuff in the 90s.' Well I know, at least the hardcore collectors (those collecting even different covers!) will like it. It's their passion. Ok. Those thinking Edgar's still a genius might like it as well. The few nuts, licking Ed's arse with a passion, might even really love it ! But if you ask me, Gabe, I just can't recommend it. Some of the 30 tracks have nice parts here and there but the set as a whole's just a stinker. Uninspired stuff, the better parts being rip-offs of either Bach or better tunes of TD itself. Ed's aced the class being the new king of boredom, all IMO of course ! Gabe, go for Q. extended and the Transsib. release and spend your money for other artists than TD. Do you already have Rob Essers 'A Lizards Walk' ? That's only one of many, many way better almost unknown artists in the shadow of a highly overrated band, called TD... Most such CDs can be found only at specialty shops or smaller outfits (at least in Montreal), and then they are always upwards of $17 CDN, usually more than $20. I'm confused. Here in the New York / New Jersey area we routinely pay $29.99 for imported cd's. (This excepts perhaps cutouts which didn't sell in the primary market). What are the complaints about? Even new domestic items start at $17.99, unless they are high volume items. High volume can be bought for $11.99 in the right places. (for me that means buying a $12.20 roundtrip train ticket). I just wanted to let you know details that I at least find quite interesting. 1 - only of marginal interest: Dream Encore's booklet gives TD's thank yous to their 'guest musicians'. Amongst those expected (Zlatko, Linda, Mark Hornby etc.) there's also - Paul Haslinger. 2: As someone some time ago expected, the tracks on Ambient Monkeys are finally indexed (well, not literally indexed, but they're single tracks without breaks - I hope you know what I mean). But: One track, Haendel's Largo, has silently disappeared so that the CD is about 3 minutes shorter. Who knows, maybe we'll see it again on TD's projected Classic CD. 3: The Hollywood Years 1 & 2 credits Edgar and Jerome as sole composers. Okay, there's Bach's Sonata on Vol. 1, but Bach is at least mentioned in the track title. All in all, I can understand Jens' refusal to say anything more about the 2 CDs. All other tracks are probably Edgar and Jerome's work (maybe some Edgar solos as well) - with one exception: Track 13 off of Vol. 2, Riding the Lizard Overland (btw, it's true that the track titles obviously don't have anything to do with film titles), is nothing else but the main theme from Red Heat, probably rerecorded or at least remixed. Now, this film was released in 1986 - what to we make of this? Hans-Peter Replies Name/Email Yahoo! ID Date Size 15054 Re: Dream Dice Quarlie@a... If I remember correctly from the Tadream official web page, something was said about Paul playing as a guest artist *before* he joined the band. And it makes sense that they would acknowledge his guest appearance separately, since They list Linda as a 'guest' even though the web page lists her as a full- fledged member of the band. Besides, under a Q & A section on the page about former TD members, Edgar acknowledges Paul as '...still the best man on the grand.' referring to his tremendous Piano skills. It also states that Paul parted company amiably, and though he will never record with them again, the general tone suggests that he is still a good friend. Unlike some other former members (Edgar says he wouldn't waste the time to have a cup of coffee with some former members...) though no names are given. Possibly the guy from the early days they expelled because he couldn't control his drug habit. [. . .] Now that not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, but *six* people on the Internet have attested to having seen a commercial (as opposed to 'official,' for you nitpickers out there) release of THE KEEP soundtrack in 1984 (five saw the LP, one saw the cassette, and one is mistakenly remembering 1984 as 1983), I think it's well past time to reevaluate such coy dismissals. >[. . .] Six people that saw it and couldn't afford it means 'one in the hand is worth six in the bush'. [. . .] What is that supposed to mean? >[. . .] Do you guys know where you are? [. . .] I don't know--in a virtually forum, maybe; sitting at keyboards, hitting keys, definitely. Your point? >[. . .] I did some research with the studios. [. . .] So what? There is good research and there's bad research. And in the case of good research, just because one tries hard doesn't mean that any significant results are unearthed. And in the case of significant results, just because the fruits of one's labors seem to amount to something doesn't mean that the data's implications have much to do with the facts. Skewed data can and often do lead to incorrect assumptions. And how does one ascertain if and when data is skewed? When subsequent data indicates that it was probably wrong. >[. . .] They claim that a soundtrack was in the works but scrapped due to legal/whatever reasons. [. . .] Given the hypothetical situation of an embarrassing situation being denied as ever having transpired, lack of evidence gives strong impetus for the embarrassed party and any and all of its constituents to profess ignorance or promulgate falsehood. It is in the best interests of the persons responsible for the accidental release to play dumb as long as there is no concrete evidence of the thing they are denying. This is not a new nor unusual concept, nor is it obscure in the public arena. Ever watch THE X-FILES? >[. . .] Nothing was ever pressed. [. . .] What makes you think this is so? Six people have attested to the fact they held a copy of such an item in their hands. They are speaking from experience and recollection. And what are you speaking from? Belief and opinion. You are speaking from belief because you have no first-hand experience of it being so--and from opinion because you really have little concrete data with which to form a assessment. As I have quoted from Einstein on innumerable occasions, 'Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.' In short, it is as hard to prove the non- existence of something as it is to prove its existence. I have five people backing *me* up in my convictions, and yet there are only three or four people here who go great lengths to discredit us. Why might this be? I think it's envy: it's difficult for some people who fancy themselves to be authorities on something to admit that there are others less knowledgable than themselves who nevertheless know something they don't. There are exceptions to this rule, however: one of the people with a story to tell about a pre-1990's copy of THE KEEP is none other than Alan Vincent Michaels, author of one of two most voluminous TD tomes, THE DREAM LIVES ON. >[. . .] If I'm lying, then they are lying [. . .] That conclusion is erroneous. >[. . .] they are lying, but why? [. . .] See above; it is either a case of ignorance or 'protecting one's best interests.' >[. . .] Keep dreaming....and your mission is to prove me wrong :-) Unfortunately, it is only people like, *you*, Vic, that have made it a 'mission.' Those who know something for certain about a subject do not appreciate being pummelled constantly with insinuations as to the status of their sanity by those who know nothing with certainty pertaining to the same subject. What is ironic is that badgering such as yours can lead to insecurity and self-questioning on the part of those who experienced something, while it is all too easy for a disbeliever to convince himself that in no way is his sanity in question. Why is this? Peer pressure. Safety in numbers. Nobody else saw something, so saying that you didn't see it either is really very easy . . . and redundant . . . and a waste of time. There is a contingent of UFOlogists who argue that if the evidence and testimony given as to the reality of the existence of UFOs were to be given or applied to any other subject in a court of law, that it would stand up as a case in which there was such an overwhelming amount of circumstantial evidence that the case would be won. I think that, analogously, six witnesses to a pre-1990's KEEP album should suffice. -- Steven Feldman + - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + | 'Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence' -- Albert Einstein | | 'Absence of the KEEP LP is not evidence of its non-existence' -- Me | + - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - + Replies Name/Email Yahoo! On top of that, he is not only the only person subscribed to the KEEP Mailing List, but the one person who saw the 1984 KEEP release not only once, or twice, or three times, but many times over the course of a week! (That makes him the Granddaddy of all the KEEP album witnesses!) Here is Set's reaction to my 'To the 1984 KEEP LP Naysayers: Piss Off' post: -- Steven Feldman + + + + + + + Message-ID: <19980627190727.6910.qmail@h...> From: 'Set Sutekh' To: ar402004@b... Subject: What's wrong with these people? Date: Sat, 27 Jun 1998 12:07:27 PDT Through my years I have encountered many variations in character and personality but I have also discovered that, even though it is generalization, you can somewhat accurately class people into two distinct groups on various issues. In the case of subjects like 'the existance of an accidental release of the Keep Sountrack' there are two camps, each with extremes moving towards middle ground: 1A) Those who saw it and know it exists, 1B) Those who never saw it but admit to the possiblity of its existance (based on their knowledge of the unreliable and mistake ridden world of music production), 2B) Those who never saw it and believe that it most likely did not exist (based on lack of solid proof), 2A) Those who agressively (and often insultingly) 'know' it did not exist (even though they have as little 'proof' as those who did see it. Since we are left with no hard evidence as to its existance, but the six of us have seen it and know what we saw, we are left with finding an explanation to counter the overwhelming pull of the statements of the actual band (Tangerine Dream) and the acutal record company. In the band's case it is very easy to come to the conclusion, base on many many previous examples, that the band itself doesn't necissarily know anything whatsoever about the manufacturing side of their music releases. Many bands in the past have been illegally ripped off by both record companies and record/cassette/cd manufactures. This isn't arguable, it's fact. In the record companies case it is very easy to come to the conclusion that they are going to put their 'best face forward' and not let anything like 'truth' or facts get in the way. Many record companies in the past have either straight out stolen money from bands or released products without the bands knowledge and/or permission. This isn't arguable, it's fact. In the manufacturers case it is very easy to come to the conclusion that they are going to cover up any mistakes or wrong doing to save themselves from criminal prosecution or civil lawsuits. Many times in the past manufacturers have pressed say 150,000 albums when they were commissioned to produce 100,000 and sold the other 50,000 out the back door. For the third time, this isn't arguable, it's fact. The music business, like any business, is full to the brim with corruption, greed, mismanagement, huge mistakes, misrepresentation, coverups, illegal activities, etc. because it is full of people, and where there are people there is also negativity. (Please note that I am aware that in recent times the level of corruption in record companies, with the exception of several rap labels, has reduced drastically, and I am also aware that where there are people there is also postivity.) With those three facts in hand, 1) Bands' ignorance to the activities of record companies and manufacturers, 2) Record companies corruption and misrepresentation, 3) Manufacturers corruption and mistakes, it is also very easy to produce a convincing argument for the 'possible' (for you naysayers, I say possible since I have not hard proof), possible existance of an unsanctioned, accidental release of the soundtrack to The Keep despite the legal tangle the band and the record company encountered. It is also very easy to produce a convincing argument that this accidental, unsanctioned release was then very quickly recalled from record stores and subsequently the mistake was covered up by either the manufacturer and/or the record company without any knowledge by the band. My conclusion is that I wonder why this is so difficult for these few agressive naysayers to digest. Is it because they simply enjoy getting people riled up? Is it because they have some bizzarre religion which prevents them from admitting that the 'possiblity' exists? Or is it because they don't have the intellectual capacity to understand that the 'possiblity' exists. I, personally, know it exists/existed because I saw it, and touched it, and examined it, over about a week or so, and longed for it all the while, and picked it up every time I went into that record store. But all I propose to these agressive naysayers is that they open their minds and realize that it is entirely 'possible' that it existed. All I can hope for in the future is that the Re-release is finally released in mass quantities so I can listen to the damn music. (And that the TDI page gets off its lazy ass and updates its information more often than once every 4 damn months!) Or, that they release The Keep on DVD with an isolated soundtrack (like Beetlejuice) so that we can have the original score that appeared in the movie, the score we Keep fanatics love, and not some bizzare version released by the band because 'they know what's best'. I'm getting impatient with the constant negitivity aimed towards Steve and the rest of us eyewitnesses. Perhaps this is the mission of the naysayers, to feel validated by making other people angry. But either way it pisses me off. Thanks, Sutekh ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com From: tadream@c... Not that it's terribly important, but I suppose their are those of you who were too young to know. A) At the time (1984) the (import) record was not $5.00, it was in fact $16.99. B) $16.99, at that time was worth (at least to me), the equivalent of about $100 today. C) I rarely walk around with $100 today. D) The ATM machines, which today litter every street corner and network every bank and grocery store, a) Were few and far between at the time, and b} Not yet networked together, so that customers of banks other than Citibank had to walk to their bank anyway. and added for me, perhaps not the others: E) I didn't have a credit card at the time. I also expected the album to be there the next day. The number of TD fans in NY at the time was not threatening. Everyone else was waiting for some Michael Jackson album, or something. I do remember the time in the seventies, when I was browsing through Free Being Records, on Second Avenue in the East Village, NY, and found a Beatles' Yesterday and Today Album with the Trunk cover, but which had the hint of a shadow of a V-neck to the right of the trunk. I didn't have the $2.00 for the used album that day either, but I had the presence of mind to hide it among 'Cowsills' albums. The following day, after being abused by a wino for sitting out on the sidewalk, I managed to retrieve that record, which is still in my possession. Against collector recommendation, I carefully, and very successfully steamed of the Trunk cover, so that I can display the 'Butcher cover'. Socrates' Phos album slipped through my fingers at Titus Oaks' Records in Brooklyn, where I also lost out years earlier on 'An Interview with Duane Allman' on Capricorn Records. Things like this happen. I don't let it bother me. By the way, Phos does exist, and so did the Duane Allman Interview. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com From: tadream@c... (Hermes Guzman) Greetings all- This is the review of the track that I wrote for Voyager late last year. Hope you enjoy it! Well, most of you anyway...;) ===================== Voxel Ux (1996) 11:59 ===================== For those of you who read the end of the book first, as well as those who still live in the '70's (or '80's for that matter!) allow me to jump straight to the end and give you the bottom line: _Melrose_, _Quinoa_ and _220 Volt Live_. [Now that they're gone, I'll get on with it!] This song is a very unique part of Tangerine Dream's oevure. Not the for the music itself, mind you, but rather the circumstances surrounding it. A twelve minute song that was meant only for the ears of twelve fans who were part of a contest sponsored by the band on their website. For a more detailed examination of those events, please see Voyager issue 16/17 Vol. 1, pps.32-34, as well as the official TD website. The song itself is quite interesting, yet simple, both in style and content. Stylistically, 'Voxel Ux' fits into the early nineties catalog quite snugly. There are hints and elements of _Melrose_, _Quinoa_ and _220 Volt Live_ to be found here within it's thematic structure and sound textures. In fact, this song would be a great companion piece to 'Quinoa' on that eponymous CD...hmmmmm...the original TDIFC announcement about the special Fanclub CD said there was to be over *40* minutes of exclusive music on it! Let's see now: 28:30 for 'Quinoa' plus 11:59 for 'Voxel Ux'... Anyhow, 'Voxel Ux' contains two distinct yet complimentary sections. For the first section, the instrumentation is simple, the tempo leisurly and the arrangement airy, but it still manages to draw you into it's spell. It's a rather formal sounding affair which manages to imply the start of a journey filled with intrigue and mystery. I'm travelling on the Orient Express to make a clandestine rendezvous with a beautiful double agent (well..this is *my* fantasy..er, review, after all!) Among the passengers are agents who are hunting the both of us. Upon making contact at the station in Istanbul, we are discovered and the chase begins! And just like a good mystery, it has a couple of 'plot twists': twice during the first section it seems ready to launch into a new direction, only to return instead to the theme. But since they point to the third change, which leads into the second section, I don't linger long at these forks in the road. Much like 'Quinoa', we start off softly on soothing strings, with a recorder-esque patch providing a sort of wistful aire. To this is added piano and marimba ostinato patterns, which are then joined by breathy synths, string pad stabs, synth bass stings and a shakuhachi-like phrase, all building a very dramatic and tense atmosphere...which then dissipates when the stabs and stings abruptly give way to the marimba, strings and synths joined now by hi-hat and a sampled acoustic guitar playing a simple melody! This is the actual theme for this section and is also what imparts the sense of the journey. Soon we encounter another seeming thematic change, as the marimba stops and the shakuhachi returns with a new short theme over the strings and synths, which just as suddenly returns to the main theme...and then the synth bass returns with the breathy synths over a rapid, stuttering tempo change. And just as it builds into what seems to be the next theme...it, too, dissipates back into the main theme! After another :30, the first section ends, gracefully returning to the soothing strings and synths that opened the song, but only briefly, as the third time's the charm for thematic changes! A different bass patch appears along with the recorder patch sharing similar ostinato patterns, which is joined by another synth-lead sketching out a shifting sequence which signals the end of the journey, but not the intrigue. This bridge has elements of all the previous feints and reminds one of the bridges in _220 Volt_. You also sense that this time, something is going to happen. And it does. The second section is where the plot thickens. Like the first section, the instrumentation and arrangement are simple and airy. Unlike the first section, however, the pace is insistent, which has everything to do with the sequence and percussion which have been added to the mix! This section is very reminiscent of the last 5:00 of 'Quinoa', or even 'One night in Medina', in it's slight eastern flavor. And just for good measure, there is a touch of 'Melrose' in it's texture. As the bridge section draws to a close, a new plucked-synth ostinato pattern comes in amongst dark, breathy synths, phase-shifting pads, strings and now percussion (which is very similar to 'Two Bunch Palms', in fact.) This all comes together to provide a propulsive bed for another simple melody, this time using a tack-piano patch, over gradually ascending string pads. This soon comes to a seemingly abrupt end with a piano chord signaling a new direction, with just the string bed and piano at first carrying the sequence and a new melodic phrase, while the percussion pattern shifts as well. The tack-piano rejoins the sequence now, along with a bassy synth-marimba patch providing yet another melodic theme, with another filter-swept synth-pad for effect. This segment, I feel, serves as the theme for this section, if not the entire disc. It has that sort of cinematic feel to it, like main/end titles music of some sort. It then returns to the previous section for another run, which as before, soon brings us back to the main theme. The last four measures repeat once, and then it ends sharply. Overall, then, 'Voxel Ux' is a very satisfying travelougue by the visionary pioneers of this genre. This is also a great song to listen to while you are riding your bicycle! And, of course, if you happen to find yourself on a train to Istanbul... [P.S: For those who are curious: a 'Voxel' is a three-dimensional pixel; 'Ux' is the French pronounciation of 'ox'! Badump-bump.] (c)(p) Hermes Guzman 1998 (c)(p) goozer 1998 --------------------------------------------------- 'Those who believe the world is made up of shades of grey have been staring at the line between black & white for so long that their vision has blurred.' --------------------------------------------------- From: tadream@c... I didn't realize that THE KEEP was also released as an import? BTW, I wasn't born yesterday either. I have too believed things in my life that were not true, so no big deal. The burden lies on all of these witnesses to produce the evidence. I'm not trying to insult anyone on the topic of this myth about The Keep LP. I want to Keep the topic even-sided so Steven doesn't convince everyone to believe something when there is no proof. (Dave Datta is cringing now ;-) I speak to this because I did some research on this topic and I will defend it. Some gather data from various sources and then claim since they have so much data that the sum of the data must amount to a fact. One even said that a court of law would conclude (maybe I mean confirm) this. So after 7 years or so of posting maybe we will all admit that this LP exists and it will be concluded in a US (only) court that this LP exists by circumstantial evidence. And this will lead to the proof that UFOs exist because one was shaped as a vinyl disc and had a Virgin logo on it.... And I will tell everyone for the rest of my life that it was I NOT Steven that knew for sure that this LP existed. Do you want me to continue.....? And I have to say that a concert put on by JMJ is better than any concert foootage I have ever seen of TD. If you get a chance to see the show it is a definte must see. JMJ has many visual effects and lasers which may have been tied into the keyboard synths. (he places his hands over the laser light and you get sound) He may have had someone in back of him do the keyboards....I am not sure. He also had a box with a metal rod sticking vertiaclly out of the top and another piece bent like a key in the right hand side. This thing appearred to work like the air-synth I have seen on some other shows on instruments. You move your hand close to it and the sound varies by how close you are to the rods. There were also some very large puppets and lots of pyrotechnics. Granted, the show was outside but he could have done most everything he did in the show, inside. I was very impressed with the show and I may make a CD of the show if time permits. Let me know if any of you would like a CD of the show and what you could offer in trade and I will see if I can put the project together. For those of you who have the Tommyknockers CD, you know the quality that can be turned out. THE HIGHLANDER P.S. Ah yes....but I consider all this gimmicry - JMJ plays to the masses - and has considerable financial backing from various organisations to put on these huge 'events' which are attended by tens of thousands of people who go to see an event rather than emerse themselves in the music . I have seen TD concerts in all the UK tours since 1978.........and although I haven't seen any JMJ live events - I know which I prefer - both musically and visually. The TD concerts are intimate - I have never been disappointed with their light shows - especially the 1981 (Logos) and 1986 shows when they used projected lights (1981) and images(1986) on a circular screen - bit like Pink Floyd. Although I like JMJ, and would have liked to have seen some of his concerts, particularly Houston, I would not trade the opportunity for a TD Concert. I can not imagine the tape of a 'spectacle' concert to be as satisfying as the tape of a TD concert. Primarily because the scope of the spectacle is lost on a restrictive screen. Speaking of spectacles, I did say that I would mention the Isao Tomita concert 'Back to New York' performed in New York City's Battery Park. I have mentioned to some my horrible recollection of dates, but I think it was Sept 11, 1986. (Sept is correct; it was either the day before or after my birthday, Sept 12 and 1986 would place it two years after the Linz concert, which seems right). Yes, he had lasers, projected on the clouds above. He had co-ordinated fireworks, launched form three separate barges floating in the river, the main one near the Statue of Liberty. He had Speakers behind the audience at the perimeter of the park, (four banks). He had speakers in front of the audience at the waterfront (right and left banks). He had speakers on barges 150 ft beyond the waterfront (also right and left). At one point, when he performs the 'Close Encounter of the Third Kind' music (where the scientists attempt to communicate with the alien ship in the landing field with music), he even has a helicopter fly overhead with a suspended speaker to play the alien spaceship's part. At several points during the show, guest soloists sail in on small boats, perform from the boat, then depart. The Staten Island Ferry was used to house a choir, which sailed by singing the 'Ode to Joy' as Tomita played Beethoven's 9th Sym, Movement 4. It was quite enjoyable, a marvelous birthday present, and I wish I had the performance in the proper four channel surround mode. But I'm sure that a VideoTape could not properly capture the Grand Spectacle. For those few of you unfamiliar with Tomita, imagine a TD concert with only covers of Classical / Romantic works, like they did with 'Pictures at an Exposition', 'Largo', etc. I also like Tomita's work, so it was enjoyable musically as well. If anyone was at the Linz concert, I would like to hear about it. Also, he was supposed to perform at Victoria Falls. I have wondered if that ever took place. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com From: tadream@c... Hey, I did some research -- for a term paper for a graduate school *class* on research, writing research proposals, and research techniques -- which took me weeks to complete, but by the time I had gotten some materials that had taken a long while to arrive via interlibrary loan, I soon discovered that my research -- due to lack of key data -- was woefully inadequate -- and that work that I had thought was pretty damned good was naive at best. The work that I put into this class took *much* longer to complete than the inquiries you made re THE KEEP. When JMJ played Oxygene 13 as his last number he played every note live, even the odd wrong one! OK there was some backing, which may or may not have been pre-recorded, but he played his bit live, as he had done through the whole concert. The reason that there are 4-5 other musicians with him is that all the music you hear is live. He could not possibly play everything, the music is too complicated. This is the excuse TD give for producing a MIDI-concert. Maybe they should go on stage with 15 keyboardists to produce a truely live gig? Many years ago I read an interview with JMJ when he said that he would never tour, as it would be 'like asking Stanley Kubrick to produce 2001:A Space Oddesy on stage!' Well he has, but only by taking others along with him. BTW, the 'box with aerials' that someone mentioned is a Theremin, which he certainly played live, along with a whole host of old analogue synths which were built before MIDI came along. There was even live, edited video taken from a camera on his glasses! He is a true showman, his concerts are quite spectacular, but I agree that the TD gigs are much more involving and the lighting and effects can be just as enjoyable. As I But Steve, you have no concrete evidence either. You have several people's opinions, which were probably influenced by each other. If you have seriously studied UFO & alien sightings, you'll understand how one sighting influences another, especially in the details. What one person saw 14 years ago may not have been the official release of the soundtrack on LP, but something else entirely, but after 14 years and under the influence of. . . other people who think they may have seen it, their recollections may not be as precise as they think. For example: I saw TD for the first time in 1986. I finally got a tape of the show in about '95 or so. Until then, I could have sworn they did everything off of Underwater Sunlight. Then I hear the tape (which I know is real because I can hear my voice on it!) and lo and behold, they didn't play it all! >have quoted from Einstein on innumerable occasions, 'Absence of evidence >is not evidence of absence.' In short, it is as hard to prove the non- >existence of something as it is to prove its existence. Logically, one cannot _disprove_ anything, therefore, the burden of proof lies on those who make extraordinary claims. Einstein agreed. Carl Sagan said (though I believe he paraphrased someone else) that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. > What is ironic is that badgering such as yours can lead to >insecurity and self-questioning on the part of those who experienced >something, while it is all too easy for a disbeliever to convince Let me correct you: _believe_ they experienced something. But the badgering can go the other way. I was on a paranormal mailing list for a while, and once I recalled on the list a dream I had where I was floating over my body, looking down on it from above. Just a dream, nothing more. Several people on the list insisted I had an out-of-body experience. If I was as gullible as they, I'd be going around now belieiving I had an OBE (out of body experience, not Order of the British Empire :-). My wife had a dream when she was pregnant with our first kid that there were little white men around our bed, pointing at her belly. Again, just a dream, but it just as easily could have been perceived as real, and those little dudes could have been aliens that impregnated her as part of an experiment. Of course, that would explain a lot with my son! :-) Moral of the story: never believe everything people tell you. One half is BS, the other is wrong. > There is a contingent of UFOlogists who argue that if the evidence >and testimony given as to the reality of the existence of UFOs were to >be given or applied to any other subject in a court of law, that it >would stand up as a case in which there was such an overwhelming amount >of circumstantial evidence that the case would be won. I think that, >analogously, six witnesses to a pre-1990's KEEP album should suffice. They must not be lawyers, because without physical evidence, eyewitness testimony is almost worthless. Read Elizabeth Loftus's book _Eyewitness Testimony_. You may change your opinion. But to Steve's defense: I've heard a couple of record store owners say that it may have been released (reliable, non-biased witnesses) and Edgar's statements on the Web site sound awfully fishy (like no explanation as to why there never was a release), so I think the witnesses' stories are credible, but until someone antes up, we'll never know. Indeed, after seeing him do this at Houston (1986?) I performed a similar task (on a much more basic scale) for a science project. Whether or not he does actually do this though, I'm still not sure. From what I see each beam he breaks does not correspond to a particular note (if you see what I mean). I have two possible reasons for this. 1. He is miming, and forgets which beam to play for a particular note. or 2. The notes are a pre-stored sequence, and with each broken beam, the next note plays, meaning that he just has to break any beam to get the next note. He just moves left and right for theatric effect. > He also had a box with a metal rod sticking vertiaclly out of the top > and another piece bent like a key in the right hand side. He directs the other musicians. I can forgive this though, when I think that he actually composed it all in the first place. Rather like when a classical composer creates a masterpiece for an orchestra to play. No-one complains that he isn't playing it, but 50 odd musicians are taking his place. At last years gig however, he did seem to take a more active role in the playing than at any other concert I've seen him in. Lawry From: tadream@c... Interesting. You've just proved that you're no lawyer! If you presented your cases on physical evidence alone you'ld be starving most of the time. In your opinion, I suppose, the American Revolutionary War never occured. There is really no physical evidence other than stories in books by purported eye witnesses, and books by others only relying on purported eye witnesses. Added to that, items which PEOPLE said were involved in the 'so-called' war. UFO's almost invariably have never been held in the hand and inspected by eye-witnesses. The sighting of a Keep album was interesting, but I'm sure it did not induce 'mass hysteria' in those surrounding me at the time, nor did it induce any personal hysteria in me. That an album in J&R's import aisle, in the section labelled 'Tangerine Dream', which had printed on the cover 'The Keep' might actually be something else which was only mistakenly identified as 'The Keep' is an interesting posit. (Alex Boretz) > Really-From: Bennett Cookson > > What is Destination Berlin like? > I have not heard much about it... The synth sound is straight from 'Optical Race' (same Atari gear, I guess.) Musically it's not one of T.D's better albums, IMO. I feel that the themes - weak to begin with - aren't developed or produced very intricately. Certainly not as well as the songs on 'Opital Race' and 'Lily on the Beach' are. What you basically have are 'soundtrack' tunes (though not of the same calibre as 'Sorcerer', 'Thief', 'Wavelength', 'Fire- Starter'... [insert your favorite T.D. soundtrack album here]...) The liner notes state that T.D.'s music was used for the (then) new 360 degree cine-theatre in Berlin. So, perhaps, given the audience they were aiming at (tourists from the U.S.? ;-) Edgar and Paul probably decided to 'dummy down' their tunes. > ...and it is not widely available. > (Although I saw it listed on www.Amazon.com) It's also available on www.musicblvd.com Hope this helps. -Alex p.s. Well, I haunted record stores in the '80s looking for TD, and was told it would be coming out soon. I never saw it. Six people say they saw it, 382 -- on this list, mind you -- say they didn't. Where is the album now? It's never popped up at a record show, in a used vinyl store or at a garage sale? But you still have missed my point. I believe you. I believe Steve. I believe the others. I also believe in UFO's (but not abductions). There's too much that doesn't add up, like Edgar's vehement denial. The Communists used to say that those who acted the most loyal to the party were the ones to kill first. Why hasn't Ed said something like 'Yeah, there was supposed to be a ST, but it got held up because of the different copyright ownerships and so it couldn't get released,' rather than saying you're delusional? THAT, to me, is the biggest evidence that there is more to the Keep LP story than the official sources say. There's also the question of what you and the others saw. I don't think you're lying, or delusional. You might have been mistaken, and I find it interesting that you're so absolutely positive of what you saw 14 years ago. But there is the other side of the coin. So far, there is no copy of the LP that any of us can find. There is also no apparent Copyright Office paper trail, as I have determined. There is also the denial of the LP's existance by TD and the record company, for what it's worth. If you were an impartial observer, what would you decide? Again, I must apologize for the waste of babdwidth on a topic many of us are tired of. Scott From: tadream@c... Alexander square is a cool track, as is Wall Street (my favorite). The last track is a reprise of Alexander Square (just shorter, mixed slightly different) and there is another track with the same basic melody as Alexander Square, but slower and more introspective. All in all a really good album. I didn't realize it was hard to find. I picked it up the first time I saw it, (probably 4-5 years ago now). The whole album has a 'happy' maybe even jubilant tone to it. (Of course it was written for a celebration...) Just to offer a counterview, Destination Berlin does fit in with Melrose, Lily on the Beach, and Optical Race. These are the years of TD that I like the least because of the thinness of the sound and non-creativity IMO. It sounds like the same song over and over, at least to my ears. It's funny. White Eagle sounds 'thin' too, but it's creative as hell and not predictable upon first listen. I guessed where Destination Berlin was going at every turn... The only albums from 1986-1992 that I really listen to are Livemiles, Tyger (the ORIGINAL 1987 release, not the new ver.), Miracle Mile, and 220 Volt. -Morgan From: tadream@c... Does anyone know which show? I've heard that it was recorded 11.15.82 in Berlin at the International Congres Centrum. Is this true? This boot sounds way better than fantapes from this period. Was it a soundboard recording? I've not seen a cover to this boot, nor heard it mentioned along with other vinyl boots. Was it a rehearsal tape that circulated informally? Some of the tracks don't appear on the Logos release of the Dominion show on this tour. Does anyone know the names and order of the tracks on these two recordings (Logostypes vs. Logos)? Why was the release called Logos? Lots of questions, I know; perhaps this thread can bring some interesting trivia to light. If so, where can I find the original on CD? I do remember at one point someone indicating that there was more than one release of this album. 2) Where can I find Ages on CD? I also need to know if someone would be able to make me a CD-R or something with the track that was omitted (perhaps you can throw on a copy of the bonus disc from Dream Dice :-) ). The copy of Macula Transfer that I have is a great album; I'd go so far as placing it in my own mind as one of the greatest space-music albums of all times, with Jarre's Oxygene and such. 'Ages' is readily available on CD. I got my copy from SuperCollector (try them at supercollector@s...). Since I never got 'Ages' on vinyl, I can't help you with the last bit (and I don't have CDR unit anyway), but with luck, perhaps 'Electronic Orgy II' may include that missing track (of course, that would P.O. Ed to great length... Perhaps *he* should have put that track in the Dice?) > > The copy of Macula Transfer that I have is a great album; I'd go so far as > placing it in my own mind as one of the greatest space-music albums of all > times, with Jarre's Oxygene and such. (I use Atari and PC btw) I use(d) Atari and PC too, but don't blame the crappy soundboard for the worse midi-timing and buy yourself a good MIDI card for your PC ! ;-) Whether the midi in-out are internal or not, isn't important, btw. The cpu/mainboard/card design (IRQ handling) and the OS certainly are. Kindly, Jens From: tadream@c... If so, how amenable would you be to transferring the entire soundtrack of a film from LD onto two CD-Rs in service of aiding in a little project? Please reply off-list. Thanks.
