These concerts were played before White Eagle was released, so the original attendees were getting much more 'previously unreleased' material than we are now. The second half of the concert features a longer mix of Mojave Plan as well as a long mix of Choronzon from Exit. >I do however >find Logos Pt1 growing on me....... The heavy handed synth work, later >dropped in the Logos Live recording does have a certain feeling to >it....almost bold and unabashed!! I wonder if you're referring to the keyboard sounds added in the studio 16 years after the concert was recorded? The most harsh sounds, i.e. those which almost drown out the original music, are additions to the original concert material. The whole album has been seriously Tangentized. Perhaps also of interest to those wo don't know ... the last two minutes of the album / Bondy Parade are complete fabrication. Edgar should have wandered on stage and let rip with a classic guitar solo. Not quite sure why that was cut. Having said all that, I think Sohoman sits nicely alongside Logos and certain other unmentionables as an experiment in changing he sounds of the past. Unfortunately, this does ring some alarm bells as far as the other proposed 'classic' recordings are concerned (i.e. Soundmill Navigator). -------------------------------------------------------------- Craig R. We From: Derk Also, may I be so bold as to ask how you know Franke was so influential when >you haven't heard a non-Franke TD CD? Good question, and one I knew I could expect. First of all, I don't think it's necessary to know any post-Franke TD to say something about TD's music when he *was* in the band. I mean, if TD hadn't continued making music after Franke left, would we then never be able to say something about his influence? Anyway, I've been reading into TD a lot lately, interviews, biographies, etc. None of those ever put one (writing) member forward as musically dominant so I have to assume that all of them are more or less equally responsible for the musical direction. In Franke's case this would mean about 33% (during the several triumvirats) and 50% (just with Froese as on Force Majeure and Underwater Sunlight). I think that's pretty influential. Franke once said during an interview that he was more responsible for the musical direction of TD and Froese was more responsible for the conceptual and management side of things. I know Froese doesn't agree but there has to be some basis of truth in Franke's statement, or why would he make it? This would show that Franke had a large say in the musical direction being taken. Also on this very list I've been reading about Franke loops, Franke rolls, Franke this and Franke that. It seems a lot of TD's typical sounds are attributed to him. His influence in TD? Finally sometimes the members of this list divide themselves into two groups: those who prefer the 'old stuff' as in eighties and seventies, and those who prefer the nineties with later eighties albums like Optical Race and Lily On the Beach often being included in the 'nineties'. Is it coincidental that the thing that separates these two 'epochs' is Franke's departure? I can't base my statement on the music itself because the booklets don't say Froese played this note on that part, Franke played the other low note and Schmoelling did that weird sound effect, so I've got to base it on the 'litterature'. Satisfied? ;-) Two messages later you wrote: >After all this discussion, you'll have to keep us posted on your activities, >Derk. Well, today I went out and brought home Optical Race, Quinoa and Mars Polaris, one album each out of your first three categories. I'm playing Mars Polaris at this very moment and liking what I hear. But I'll give each disc a couple more spins and relate my 'findings' later. Finally: >I suggest that picking any album from each of these 3/4 groupings gives a >reasonable view of what the style is like. Something which could not be applied >to TD albums between 1970 and 1985 (i.e. 'randomly' selecting Forc Majeure >would not have given much indication to the style of Cyclone or Tangram). Why not? Except for a few 'problem' albums like Cyclone, Force Majeure and Tyger, I think the 1974-1987 period could be categorised, maybe as follows: 1: Phaedra, Rubycon 2: Ricochet, Stratosfear, Encore (, Sorcerer?) 3: Tangram, Thief, White Eagle, Logos, Hyperborea, Poland, Le Parc, Underwater Sunlight I wouldn't know how the soundtracks would fit in as I hardly know them. Just wondering. As to the music of Chris Franke lately, I have heard a few of the B5 soundtracks and wasn't impressed. I did not like Celestine Prophecy or Transformation of the Mind. I did buy Epic, with some trepidation, and only because it was on sale plus free shipping a few months ago. I will choose any TD album since Franke left over any of his solo releases, although Klemania was a damn good album (and the Morphing Space cd single was excellent). Carlo From: 'Michael A. Did anyone ever hear 'Enchanting Nature'? It is a very moving piece of work. I have also been informed the same goes for 'The Celestine Prophecy' (I do not own it, YET.). If you compare the solo stuff of CF & EF, IMO, EF sounds more like TD stuff. Now, depending on what you want, that is actually a good thing (IMO). But the fact that the CF stuff does not sound like TD all the time has to stand for something, right? I'm sorry you now feel this way - it wasn't my intention to try and change your appreciation of the music. All I wanted to do was make sure you knew that what you were hearing was not what attendees heard at that concert. In general, I've usually been a defender of TD's right to tangentize their music - I believe at one point I suggested that it was another form of the experimentation that some die-hards claimed had been missing for years. My main problem, however, is with the way that the album is presented. There is no mention of the additional keyboards and is presented under the 'classic' banner. This could be (and obviously was, in Larry's case) misleading to some. I don't why this was done - personally I think it may be more to do with hiding faults in the master tape rather than anything more sinister. That might explain why some tracks are significantly changed and others are untouched. -------------------------------------------------------------- Craig R. J. Cordrey craig.cordrey@g... Celestine Prophecy is a good effort, but it is not all Franke (at least I can't believe it is) he has never shown this kind of multifaceted variety before or since. When I listened to this album from 1981, I > was amazed with the use of the vocal samples and still today I enjoy it > very much. When in 1996 TD released GC, it just sounded to me as 'deja > vu'. Actually, I don't listen to much mainstream, pop, 'experimental', or electronic music for the express reason that so much of it is crap and I don't have the time, nor the interest, to pursue sampling tons of music that I know won't even come close, in terms of quality or timelessness, to the music I normally listen to. And what is that? A lot of genres. Classical, largely baroque, as well as early music (Medieval and Renaissance). Jazz -- good jazz, not commercial fluff. Folk -- REAL folk, such as traditional music from Europe. In fact, I'm in a Celtic/Early Music band myself. Sure, I love good rock, and even more eclectic modern music sometimes, but I hate commercialism and mass-market garbage that is passed as innovation. The point of all this? Read on.... > The use of ethnic samples has been over-explored in the 90s, and IMHO > Tangerine Dream didn't achieve anything new or different with GC. Rhetorical question: do they have to? Seriously, probably the modern world's #1 philosophy is that change is everything. Everything has to keep changing, all the time. What's PC (Politically Correct) is always changing. Fashion is always changing. Entertainment is always changing. Even people's outlooks on life are always changing. Personally, I am sick, sick, sick of change for 'change's sake'. And that's why I am so incredibly impressed by TD's music. They're not creating music for the here and now. Can't you understand that? They don't care if some fans think they're this, or that, or that they're not making 'record sales', or that people label them as 'has-beens', or whatever. Bach was labeled as a has-been. His manuscripts ended up as butcher paper. The point of all this is that TD is making music that will stand the test of time. There's music I listen to now that was played/composed many years ago that sounds dated and unoriginal. And then there's music that, while you can obviously pinpoint a date in time for its conception, it's still as good (if not better) than it was then. TD has, of course, come out with some mediocre music in the past. But, heck, I'm sure even Beethoven wrote a few 'duds'. But you have to take a musician/composer/group's body of work as a whole, and view individual works not by themselves, but in tandem with the rest of the body, and music elsewhere. So what's this got to do with Goblin's Club? In my opinion, the best music is created when the composer or the player has not many ideas, but one. The art of composing, or playing music is to express one idea in many ways. Classical composers were masters of that. And that's why they created some of the finest music ever written. Yes, I can agree that Goblin's Club comes out of the same ideas as several of the albums that came before. However, it was expressed differently than ever before. That's what makes it so good. TD took their ideas and expressed them in a new way. And there are few ideas, which is a good thing. The reason I think Tyranny of Beauty is one of the weakest albums I've heard that TD did this decade is because they had too many ideas. It was very different than the previous album, Turn of the Tides, which came out of so few ideas that you might almost say that it's just one, big idea. > Take > for example Jean Michel Jarre's 'Zoolook' from 1984. Whenever you like > or hate this album, you will agree that Jarre made a different use of > vocal samples in there, and so 'Zoolook' sounds unique. 'Goblin's Club' > on the other hand, mainy because of the unfortunate choice of that vocal > sample on 'At Darwin's Motel', sounds to me just like an Enigma album > (listen to 'The Child in us' from Enigma 3, and you'll see what I mean). My response to this, and your claim of having 'deja vu' when you listened to Goblin's Club, is that I just popped in Handel's _Water Music_, which I hadn't listened to for a long time, and realized 'hey, this sounds suspiciously like the opening for the Messiah!' I don't which came first, but Handel often stole ideas from himself and expressed them differently. In fact, famous composers used to do that all the time. They even stole ideas from other people. What's wrong with TD using some other people's ideas and expressing them in a unique way? BTW, I've never heard Enigma, and, furthermore, if they used that vocal sample before TD did, it doesn't bother me in the slightest! > So, if you like Goblin's Club, good for you, but please don't call it > experimental. I call it experimental because on it TD expressed their ideas in a new, experimental way. If you mean it isn't totally out there la la land compared to their previous works, than, no, it isn't experimental. But, personally, I'm glad it isn't totally out there la la land! To wrap it up, I think people need to stop comparing modern TD to a bunch of niche genres that are constantly changing and morphing. Compare TD to bigger things. Compare TD to rock, jazz, classical, folk, more established electronic genres, etc. I think you may start to view the TD of today in a different light. On the other hand, maybe I've just been listening to too much TD lately. I need to take a break! ;) Regards, Jared _____________________________________ Jared White E-mail: jwhite@s... Yesterday, a small package arrived from Switzerland with one cassette tape enclosure... For me personally, I simply begin with the simple premise that 'Tangerine Dream' is the greatest electronic musical band on the planet. Following that, there is little for me left to debate within myself. Never would I try to prove to anyone that this is how one should also feel. As, I am only expressing a personal opinion of how I feel as an individual. Additionally, knowing how fortunate I am to have the unique specialized knowledge of almost all of their published works, rarities, and lastly the voluminous amount of the unpublished recordings of the live TD concert material. I made a bold statement on the KALX (90.7 FM) special TD radio show (10/20/94) in reference to what it means to me to be a diehard. During the show, DJ Minor-Minor asked me this thought provoking question and I responded something like this: 'It was from Bob that I learned what it meant to be a TD diehard. That's is the music, and only the music which truly matters. And... to seek it out in whatever form one can and must -- just to hear it.' That almost six years ago and I still firmly believe it to this very day. For me, the music is enough... However, getting back to that parcel from Switzerland mentioned above and its contents. Sometime around 3 a.m. in the morning I began listening to 'Mars Polaris' for five straight hours. Reflecting just now to fully comprehend Rainer's comment when he said that he was putting his headphones on the for tenth time (first posted Majordomo digest, V16, #676 & reposted by John Gentile here in Tadream digest #115 on 06/20/99). With my trusty Sennheiser headphones (the Jubilee Special Edition 580) firmly set into place literally pounding the incredibly new TD pulsation's throughout my entire brain. As, it set sail over me ever so delectably with its magical spell of never-ending ecstasy. It has been a long time since I've been able to find that special TD groove (recovering from post knee surgery), but very late last night, I found it once again and boogied the night away. Clearly, just thinking about the fact that I'm going to have the original DQC digital copy of this marvelous CD in less than two more days when it's world wide release positively explodes. Now knowing full well that it will be, 'Love at first byte' (he-he). Probably, I'll be inspired to write yet another Ode to TD (or, at the very least, begin its rough construction). I must have listened to 'Comet's Figure Head' a dozen times or more. IMHO 'MP' is a keeper and I'm already referring to it as a masterpiece... Now, I say to diehards everywhere, let us bring on the TD millenium! I couldn't have said it better myself :o) I agree that they did the same thing for e-music as the Beatles did for rock, but as e-music is such a small genre in comparison to the rock scene, I doubt that there will be a huge amount of people thinking of TD records as classics. I think however that a small group of followers like ourselves will still remember their input in the music world, just like today. I'm sure that either Beethoven, nor the Beatles will be forgotten, ever, and I'm also sure that TD will be remembered - but in a smaller scale. Today originality is hard to obtain, at least the kind of originality that TD achieved with their music, and that is also the reason why I think they will be remembered a hundred years from now. Nobody else can do what they did, they are THE pioneers - and always will be. Of course, given the general artisic ignorance that seems to exist, certainly in America (and I'm a victim of this myself, I must add) -- don't expect more than a sprinkling of people to be aware of this. What makes the e-music genre so interesting is that even if musical trends are cyclical, this style becomes permanently dated by the instrumentation technology on hand at the time of creation. Groups who use older technology like the analog synths and early sampling instruments immediately engage a sense of nostalga instead of creating a fresh sound (but there are exceptions). For example, try to imagine the SORCERER soundtrack recorded at any other time but 1976, or FIRE- STARTER other than 1984. Or perhaps the best example is the reworked pieces of ENCORE that appear in the TANGENTS set. They're not bad, but you just don't feel like you're there in 1977. Cage. Stockhausen. Theremin. Bach. Lovecraft. Chaucer. Tesla. Bosch. Purcell. No matter how wacky or eclectic - or popular - the artist is (or his fans!), as long the art is recorded and accessible, it will be remembered or eventually rediscovered. The question, I think, revolves around the relative significance of an artist's work compared to his contemporaries and his successors. Purcell was not necessarily ahead of his time, but rather an innovator and earmark OF his time, and a standard by which his contemporaries were judged. Bosch was ... well, ahead and to the side somewhat, but certainly an influence on artists since his death throughout the past half a millenium, and has experienced a revival in popularity of sorts since the advent of the emulative works of Miro and Dali. Theremin: an innovator and inspiration, although hardly anybody *currently* uses his instrument. Bach was unpopular in his time and Chaucer was actually quite hated by the conservative establishment of his day, but are now staples of study. If any of this makes any sense or is relevant to TD, it is in that TD will not only be recognized for their innovation in the EM genre, but how their contemporaries and followers were inspired by and followed their style and use of the technology. We have a link to a 25-year Retrospective of Phaedra on our site, which gives more detail including other EM artists reflecting on how Phaedra and TD influenced them. The problem with the sand grains is that they all look the same, act the same and fulfill the same function. TD is like a diamond among gravel: beautiful and unique enough enough that it stands out even though other pieces of stone may be larger. (Man, am I in a kiss-ass mood these days or what? Some comparisons in this thread are not very valid. Elvis? The Beatles? c'mon. They are assured a place in history, no doubt, as they took the world by storm. But any band that leads us into a new 'era' does have a shot at immortality. So at least TD stands some chance there, but rather than be remembered by the population as a whole I think it will be 're-discovered' by a few people here and there as they watch an old movie like 'risky business' or 'sorcerer' Much the same way some of the newer fans on the list were exposed to TD. Either that or they will stumble across 'phaedra' mixed in with the Tesh and accidently buy it ;-) (NOT *my* experience, but TD is always in the 'new age' section pushed right up him and sometimes they get friendly) Or maybe our grandkids will be forced to deal with TD when they inherit huge collections of CDs and LPs and listen to them for a kick now and then. Or maybe Jerome will ~spawn~ too and TD will live on long beyond our years. I can just see myself in a old folks home bribing the nurses to run down to 'Towering Media Universe' to preorder 'Tangents Revisted' a 17 CD remixed box set with 2 new songs. But it is very likely that we, and I mean the people who are, more or less, fanatics about their cabailities, may not represent the world view. The world view is very necessary. Most of this eternal fame is based on some extremely broad categorizations as well as a considerable amount of universal praise and, the final icing on the cake, an enormous amount of the general public who agree with the high art, the criticism, the technical expertese, the fun, and the capability of the music to appropriately adorn much of their lives. Such requirements are very difficult to achieve for a long enough period to gain a universal respect necessary for artistic longevity. The two White Eagle tracks are quite close to the final versions on the studio album, but they still offer a few niceties to make them interesting. I found the Logos track to be the least to my liking. It's a bit too long and that melody they put on top of it doesn't work imo. Apparently they thought the same because it was dropped for the Logos live album! The bridge to Bondy Parade is brilliant though. The two new tracks, Ayers Majestic and aforementioned Bondy Parade are very good, too. Recommended if you like Logos and Poland. Listening to this album I really wish I could have seen TD live in that period. But I was barely eleven years old when Schmoelling left in 1985, so that would have been just a bit difficult. I think it will be very interesting to see what we, > the TD diehards, do with this new and exciting technology. The > possibilities are limitless... Yes, it's great that virtually the same technology available to TD, or any other electronic music band, is available to anybody on the planet with enough $$$ (or pounds, or francs, or whatever...). It's *how* people use technology that sets them apart from others these days, not that they have it in the first place. If I had a few hundred bucks floating around, I could go get the GigaSampler, and have the same kind of power TD had when they did Mars Polaris. However, by no means would I be able to create Mars Polaris myself just because I have that piece of gear. People create music, not machines. That's an important thing to remember, because the boundaries between music played by humans and music created by computer algorithms are becoming more and more blurred. But even though it's sometimes hard to tell them apart, that doesn't mean that people can get away with letting their machines create music for them. Audiences CAN tell the difference. An interesting side-note -- I recently picked up a Korg N1R sound module (a rack-mount version of their N1 synth) for cheap, which I was pretty excited about, and, while playing around with it today, I found a funky intrument that I instantly recognized as being an intrument on 'Lamb with the Radar Eyes' on 'Goblin's Club'. Heh, I guess TD doesn't use all original samples. But that's OK -- it's fun to be able to find an intrument on a synth and say 'hey, look what so-and-so did with it, I wonder what I can do with it!' > PS: We also owe Jared much thanks. I've never seem them live, so I can't say for sure, but I imagine they've used computers, sequencers, and other gear to play stuff in the background while they do riffs, melodies, embelishments, etc. on their keyboards. I haven't absolutly no problem with this. Their arrangments have been so complex and detailed for such a long time, they can't possibly play it all live, like they did in the early days. Personally, I wouldn't want to pay money to go hear a couple guys plunk away on synths anyway. I would want to experience the quality and subtlety of a studio album, but live, with maybe a bit of fun improvisation on top of the main arrangement -- which I believe is basically what they do anyway! Like you said, the AltaVista Babelfish translator pretty much mucks it up, but some of it was sort of pretty clear. E.F.: That is left to everyone, as he wants to handle. We could naturally also make that, but a little adventure must be simple thereby. The event organizer had to pull the plug before the audience started to throw vegetables... (at least that's what it seemed to say) A little later, Jerome quips about how the father-son cooperative working relationship works with, 'Oh, quite normally, as one introduces oneself in such a way: I rise in the morning, and there is a prayer carpet, on which I down-kneel and wait for Edgar...' Then mentions that there is a small altar in front of the carpet with all the non-Jerome TD albums! ;-) I e-mailed the solo-online people and author asking if they could provide a translation, but I'm not holding my breath. I personally really like what TD's been doing this decade, but that may be because I'm a relative newcomer to TD, and haven't been following them faithfully for the past 10, 15, 20 years, or whatever. Out of all the comments about Jerome, that's the first thing I've agreed with- solo work on the side is essential to the artistic growth of the individual artist (at least that's what seems historically correct), and therefore, to the vitality of the group as a whole. As to his contributions to TD: I cannot imagine a more fertile and rich artistic environment to grow up in than what Jerome Froese has had. Both parents are artists. We see pictures of him with Daddy on tour when he was a kid, and when his website was still up, his extensive guitar collection, amongst other things. Can you imagine growing up with the absolutely coolest and up-to-date music technology available, right at your fingertips? Not only that, but imagine your daddy is one of the top artists in the world using this technology and is even a consultant to the companies that manufacture it. Now, all you need is a little musical knowledge transfer from daddy; what better way than to actually be in the band? Like it or not, Jerome is the future of TD, unless he himself decides otherwise. The fact thathe is there in the first place is an indication of the future that Ed has in mind for TD... It's all demographics...more people > buy wimpy pop music than > TD's style of electronics. Actually, for some reason, I own a copy of the Visionquest soundtrack. It's funny, because it has the credits that are normally listed, like on a movie poster, and it says 'Music By Tangerine Dream', and of course, there's no Tangerine Dream on the actual soundtrack release. But actually, I think most of the artists who were on the soundtrack weren't new acts. Journey had been around for ages (were already pop stars, thanks to their early 80's albums), John Waite had been around for a few years (both as a solo performer and as vocalist of the early 80's band The Babys), Red Rider had been around for awhile... I can't remember who else was on that one, apart from Madonna, who WAS more or less new, though she was already having hits before that movie. Unfortunately, the idea of releasing two soundtrack albums (one being all of the pop songs and one containing the musical score, such as the work that TD would do) didn't exist at that time. Nowadays, that seems to be happening fairly frequently, though. === May you never thirst! The Scuba Diver Presently Known As Chris From: 'Steven Le Vine' From: 'kayleigh' > > Hey there all. This is, indeed, a strange outing. There seems to be only one very developed piece on board; the first track. 'Comet's Figure Head' (Is this spelled correctly? A ship's figurehead is one word, not two, but it might mean something totally different.) This composition is _wonderful_. It seems to be the only one on the disc which contains a cohesive melody and musical transitions. It also develops like a 'proper' musical piece. It has a beginning a middle and an end. It contains variations and counterpoint. The melody is handed off to several other voices and there is developmental synchrony which I find quite breathtaking at times. Quite startling, really. Really! The rest of the pieces seem quite different in the comparison. The other works seem choppy and unrelated, not only to each other but to themselves. The tunes begin and end and that is about it. There are some interesting musical figures interspersed within and throughout. However, it doesn't seem to be enough to hold either the grouping of pieces together, or to make the pieces stand out individually. It might be a 'personal opinion' type of thing, but I am not so sure. After the 'Comet's Figure Head' ends, I feel the almost irresistible urge to start the track again and, kind of bathe in the aura of the whole thing again. It has a quality of 'art,' I guess, which makes it a rather permanent addition to the TD legacy, at least to me. When the other tracks are finished, my reaction is different. 'What's next?' comes to mind. Sometimes, 'Is that one really finished?' Some of these tracks sound like movie background; they don't really start -- they don't really end -- they just sort of happen in a 'celluloid limbo.' They don't stand alone well. They need a crutch to hold them up. Since that crutch seems absent, they falter or fade rapidly once the music ends. May I remind you of two things. 1. TD is not a rock band. 2. The whole point of being a musician and a composer is to play good music and compose good music. I couldn't care less how that end is reached (except that I like art better when I know the artists are intelligent and friendly people). As long as I can pop a CD in my player, and hear great music, that's all I care about. Why should Jerome have to go through all the hassle of all that crap, just so he can express what he wanted to express all along? And Edgar really needed a new kick-start at that point in time when Jerome came on the scene. Paul Haslinger seemed to be going off into the pop/world beat genre, and he soon left the band anyway. And I think it's GREAT, read, WONDERFUL that Edgar has been working with his son for this long. He obviously must be a great father, to have such a good personal and business relationship with this son. Get a life. And as > far as judging a TD transition, you'd really need to go back in time > and > listen to everything from Electronic Meditation on and study it. Again, I agree with your premise -- however, I seem to remember being quite surprised that Sorcerer was from 1977, I thought it was much earlier. And I was totally amazed when I found out, after having heard it on Dream Sequence for so long, that 'The Dream is Always the Same' is from 1983. It sounded much earlier, too. And what makes Logos so different from Tangram, or Force Majeure so different from Richochet (all of which I've listened to in their entirety, with the exception of I haven't heard the entire album of FM, just a large portion featured on Dream Seq.)? To me, someone who has just recently 'discovered' their old material (as well as their new), TD doesn't really seem to be much slower regarding stylistic changes this decade than they've ever been, with the exception of perhaps their really early material, which, yes, I haven't really heard.... > I think I'd feel a little better about posting my opinions if I knew > I was > going to get negative responses back from people who have done their > homework and invested time and money into the older material and > have > done some critical listening to what TD was trying to accomplish in > each period. Agreed. I may not get all my facts straight, but I at least try to get a feel for the way things are before I comment on them. Which is why I didn't fully appreciate your post, Jim. You made too many assumptions, and tried to prove your point by insulting the people at the other end of the argument, instead of making informed judgements which could stand on their own merit. > But I like your posts, Jared. You do tend to make things passionate > and > interesting and you don't just bash an opponent for the sake of > sticking > up for Onkel Eddie. Appreciated. Well, thanks. I appreciate your messages too, because, even though I don't usually agree with them (obviously!), you make your point with good, solid arguments based on real facts, instead of 'this sucks, I've heard better elevator music, why don't they go do Phaedra 2 or something....' ;) I respect your opinions, and I'm not trying to make anyone like something they don't like. I'm just trying to show to you (plural, i. e., people with similar feelings to yourself) that some people feel TD is not doing mediocre work, and we are actually enjoying tremendously their newer output over the past several years. Here here again ! A new (old) TD album (up to and including Underwater Sunlight) used to be a challenge to be relished - preferably in the dark with headphones - what had they done this time where were they going ? What new sounds were going to emerge ? These days it's a challenge to get to the end of the album. I don't want them to make Phaedra again or Logos or whatever but wouldn't it be nice if they really challenged us with something new. MP is an alright album IMHO but I can only listen to it when combining with another activity like reading - it simply doesn't command any more of my attention. Maybe I'm just being selfish, maybe it's asking too much of Edgar who has given me so much already. Maybe genuine creativity and original thought isn't something you can keep going for thirty years but I can't help hoping. In the meantime I'll wait for the new soundtrack - I'm sure it will be melodic, pleasant, inoffensive, highly polished and not the least bit challenging. Agreed - if I wanted to listen to pointless 'innovative' noise making for the sake of it I'd tune in to John Peel (no disrespect there someones has to listen to all the crud to filter out the gems). The trouble is I don't think it is a slow change - it seems to be going round in circles. What is new in terms of melody, sound, composition or rhythm that were not any of the CD's released in this decade ? Yes I think your right - the same attitude probably prevailed when Ed went on stage in the early seventies and made strange noises with a slide guitar and people wondered what it was all about. Whereas that attitude worked in favour of producing truly innovative and globaly influencing music it now seems to be working against changing direction. >Even if you don't care for it, you can't >convince me it ain't > brilliant. I have many contributors and it will be a great collection when I get the time to finish it up! There is some mastering that needs to be done and there were many delays in getting some of the material, but it looks like it will be ready to distribute this fall. The summer delay is partly my fault for being busy, but also I want to wait until the fall because alot of people take the summer off and would be left out of the distribution trees. I had planned on creating a large insert with info about the musicians, but it was going to prove to be too much. Perhaps we could work together and the insert would just have a reference to your page and general info about the artists. Let me know what you think! Nice you have you back! I'm sure we'll all be looking forward to your take on TD's latest (and controversial, surprise surprise) offering (MP). Glad you had a great time in France. It is all in German, and dispels the 'myth' that they just play DAT tapes at concerts, with Ed describing his preference for the 'adventure' surrounding the possibility of something going wrong, and them having to adjust to it. Then recounts some anecdotal examples of this, including RAH '75 (interesting!), * you can now list your ICQ number in your member's profile at onelist.com, * TD and the roots of Techno * a thread of 'will TD be remembered in 100 years?' * a link to GigaSampler, technology that TD uses, at http://www.nemesysmusic.com, * Geiss and other screensavers links added to tadream website on 'Links' page, * TD to release 'Great Wall of China' soundtrack to Chinese documentary, I think that's about it. I live in > Michigan and no one seems to have it. That's because What a Blast doesn't have a North American distributor yet. You can get it as an import, but you'll have to order online from Amazon or CDNOW, and pay around 25 U.S. bucks for it (far more than I'm personally willing to shell out for a disk I haven't had a chance to hear in advance). The TDI office has made assurances that What a Blast will be distributed in North America by Miramar/UNAPIX. So I wrote to UNAPIX a couple of days ago, and they provided the following info: We have no plans at this time to release What A Blast on DVD. However, there is a 3-pack video set of What a Blast newly added to the Entertainer catalog (Item #ENA1509; price $34.98 + s/h). If you would like to purchase this title, please call our ordering department at 800-609-6111. No word about an audio CD release, I'm afraid. Yes, and I was wrong to pose that question that way. I guess that since this soundtrack (as most of TD's stuff) ignited so many images for me, I had to raise more than eyebrow at that comment. When hearing 'Outland', I picture two atmospheric craft chasing each other while skimming the Martian surface. When I hear 'Astrophobia' I think of two astronauts working outside in deep space with *something* goes terribly wrong... (and with 'Pilots', for some reason, I think of two NASA enginners running around playing pranks on each other...) I don't think my liking of TD is either blind or deaf adoration (and I gotta wonder why some people are quick to label certain fans that way...), but I don't see how it's any more/less productive than any other admiration, anyway. And to answer your second question: no, I definitely like certain pieces better than others, but (1) that occurs with other artists I like as well, (2) I've found that other people like different tracks better than others and our preferences don't always coincide.
